DHAKA — Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) is on the brink of a major transformation. Civil aviation officials have confirmed that the airport’s long-awaited Third Terminal (Terminal 3) will open its doors for initial operations on December 16, 2026.
During a recent walkthrough of the facility, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat explained that the early opening phase will begin small, managing around 20 international flights each day. This phased rollout gives airport staff, ground handlers, and border control personnel time to test real-world procedures—including automated baggage handling, immigration checks, and security equipment—under live conditions. Full-scale commercial operations involving all major airlines are planned to start between March and April 2027.
Here is a comprehensive breakdown of what this milestone means for travelers, airlines, and the future of aviation in Bangladesh.
What to Expect During the Initial Soft Launch
The opening on December 16, 2026, functions as an operational bridge rather than an instant shift of all airport traffic.
-
Select Flight Roster: Only a limited number of designated international flights will depart from and arrive at Terminal 3 during the first few months.
-
Standard Terminal Operations Continue: Unless your airline specifically lists Terminal 3 on your ticket or booking notification, you will continue using Terminals 1 and 2 for check-in and boarding.
-
System Testing and Fine-Tuning: Airport teams will monitor flight schedules, passenger movements, and baggage delivery systems to catch and resolve any technical issues before the entire building opens to the public.
Key Features and Upgrades at Terminal 3
Constructed with financial and technical support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Terminal 3 introduces modern architectural standards and massive structural expansion to Dhaka’s primary airport.
1. Massive Capacity Increase
For years, Terminals 1 and 2 have operated far beyond their intended capacity, serving roughly 8 million passengers every year. Terminal 3 adds over 542,000 square meters of floor space, raising the airport’s total capacity to more than 20 million passengers annually.
2. Faster Luggage Delivery
One of the central priorities of the new layout is cutting down waiting times at baggage claim. Thanks to advanced automated conveyor belts and high-speed sorting machines, the airport aims to deliver checked bags to passengers within 15 to 40 minutes of landing.
3. Streamlined Check-in and Security Counters
Terminal 3 features 115 check-in desks (including self-service check-in kiosks), 64 departure immigration counters, and advanced security screening systems. These upgrades will help eliminate long queues and keep passenger lines moving smoothly during peak flight hours.
How the New Terminal Helps Bangladesh
Dhaka’s main international gateway has frequently faced overcrowding, leading to delayed departures, long immigration lines, and crowded departure lounges. Terminal 3 provides essential infrastructure to support growing international travel, foreign commerce, and overseas employment for Bangladeshi workers.
Additionally, foreign airlines that previously could not schedule extra flights to Dhaka due to a lack of terminal space and parking aircraft stands will now have room to expand. With 26 new boarding bridges and expansive apron parking, the facility can comfortably accommodate wide-body long-haul aircraft.
